Hello again! It’s been almost two years since I first set this blog up to help deal with my mental health and I completely dropped the ball. This blog stopped being a priority for me, however I’m trying to change that. I want to be more consistent with it in the hope that it’ll help bring focus and motivation to my life!!
I just want to briefly talk about the COVID-19 pandemic currently happening across the world and how it’s impacted me.
I can’t lie, the past week has put a massive strain on my mental health. It’s made me feel physically and emotionally drained. The uncertainty of it all and the lack of control over the situation really sets my anxiety off. I’m struggling to find the positives in anything at the moment, so I’m going to note down a few things that I want to do over the next few weeks/months to help ease my panic and worry.
Walks
I’m lucky enough to live in the countryside and have access to some beautiful walks. Everyone knows that fresh air and a bit of exercise can do wonders for the mind so i’m aiming to get out more and explore new places. The National Trust have announced that they are offering free car parking at many of their heritage sites to help those struggling. I think this is an absolutely brilliant idea and i’m hoping to take full advantage of it!
Colouring
I have SO many adult colouring books yet they just sit in the corner of my room gathering dust! I want to try and do more colouring in my spare time as it really does relax me. I struggle to motivate myself to do anything other than watch TV at the moment, so I’m really going to push myself to change it up and do something different.
Cleaning and organising
I recently got a book for my birthday to motivate me to clean but I have been so lazy. I’ve got parts of the flat that I’ve wanted to organise and de clutter for months but keep putting them off. This pandemic is the perfect opportunity for me to knuckle down and make my flat sparkling. I really do feel as though having a tidy living space benefits your mental health. Tidy home, tidy mind!!
Noting the positives
One thing about me is that I can be extremely negative. I struggle to recognise positive aspects of my day and tend to focus on anything that’s gone wrong. This has been heightened during the pandemic as I feel like I’m having no positive experiences at the moment. Although this may not be the case, my mind instantly goes into “this is never going to end” mode and I put myself in a negative mindset that I can’t get out of. I’m aiming to make notes on my phone of each positive experience every day, no matter how silly or irrelevant I think they may be. I’m then going to try and reflect on these positive experiences before I go to bed. I’m hoping that this will help me fall asleep with a more positive mindset and ease my anxiety about the next day!
Facebook detox
I’m glued to my phone, it’s a nightmare. I didn’t realise how attached I was to it until I deleted my Facebook app a couple of days ago. I got rid of the app because the negative coverage was sending me into panic mode and I couldn’t stop myself from reading it all. It was so unhealthy and it all got too much for me to deal with. I was constantly bursting into tears because I just felt like everything around me was falling apart. I think deleting the app has enabled me to take a slightly less panicked stance on the situation. I’m aiming to keep the app deleted until I feel like I’m ready to see what the world is saying. For now, I’m sticking to looking at dog pictures on Instagram!!
Talking to someone
I bottle things up!! I’ve always struggled to admit when I’m not doing ok and it’s something I’ve been trying to work on for a few years now. I’m extremely lucky to live with my partner who fully understands what I’m experiencing. I have a great support network around me, so I know that I can reach out if it all gets too much (easier said than done I know). I’m going to try and take full advantage of this, as we all need to stick together! It’s rare that everyone is experiencing the same uncertainty and feelings at the same time, so take advantage of that and talk about your feelings.
Those are just a few things that I’m aiming to do throughout the pandemic to ease my mind. I’m going to take each day as it comes and not be too hard on myself if I have a down day where I do nothing. Please reach out if you’re struggling, I’m always here to talk.
Em x
